Ravenna is famous for its mosaics. They were completed almost 2000 years ago. We went to the San Vitale church, which is supposed to have the most beautiful mosaics. When we looked inside, most of the walls other than the main altar were stone. The altar was done beautifully with gold and blue tiles, and they depicted some of the saints, and the emperor and the empress. After we had taken that all in, we went out to a crypt. The crypt was entirely mosaic inside, but my favorite part was the windows. They were alabaster, but they looked like a thin sheet of marble that was letting in tiny bits of light. That was the most beautiful crypt I have ever been in.
