Gone to the dogs in Alaska

We spent most of the day playing with puppies at Jeff King’s Anchorage kennels. There is no possibility anyone could have enjoyed themselves more.

This is Lily. She is an adorable, 6 week old Alaskan Husky puppy. We had a great time learning about the different breeds that have run in the Iditarod, and all of the preparation and training (for both humans and dogs). Peyton, who was on the 2006 Iditarod winning team has run over 16,000 miles in less than a decade! I always thought Siberian Husky dogs were the perennial Iditarod winners, but, we learned that Malamutes, Huskies, Shepherds and other dogs have been cross bred over the years to create these running machines.

When I asked if the dogs got to sleep in bed with Mr. King, I earned a derisive chuckle. When we learned that King has 200 dogs, I could see the difficulty. 🙂
